Europcar, Mannequins, False Legs And The Back End Of A Horse

Europcar hires out thousands of vehicles daily, so it is not surprising that a survey of its branches revealed some strange excuses for damage and late return as well as some rather unusual items of lost property.

While the Europcar survey revealed some surprising results, perhaps one of the most amusing was supplied by a car hire customer who got more than he bargained for while he waited for a horse to pass on a country lane, after the horse decided to take a rest on the bonnet. The driver watched in horror as a horse, complete with rider in tow, slowly backed onto the car as a vehicle on the opposite side passed in a narrow country lane.

Another unusual animal encounter was reported when Europcar staff at the Newport car hire branch noticed a large chunk was missing from the bumper of one of their cars. The customer explained they had visited Longleat Safari Park and driven through the lion’s enclosure where a lion had taken off a part of the bumper with his claws.

The survey also showed that while sunglasses, CDs, mobile phones and keys are among the most common items left in Europcar’s vehicles, sometimes stranger items can also turn up – ranging from items like a mannequin, to 50 fluorescent light bulbs, and a Scottish Piper’s black ostrich hat. As well as these strange items, Europcar’s customers have also been known to leave more valuable goods. One customer left £1000 worth of designer clothes in the boot of a car.

Derby car hire customer nearly lost their cool when they were hit by a van driver from behind. When Europcar’s staff asked why he had driven into her, she explained that he’d been distracted by the ice cream he was eating flying onto his seat.

The three products — TireStat™ TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system), VisionStat™ Camera Systems, and SenseStat™ Obstacle Detection Sensor System, – are designed to improve overall driving safety, while reducing costs.

TireStat TPMS The TireStat TPMS detects overheated, under-inflated, over-inflated and rapid leaking tires before a tire incident occurs. Alert levels are easy to set for both pressure and temperature for each tire. The sensors have an anti-theft feature and air can be added without removing the sensors.

VisionStat Camera Systems The VisionStat Camera Systems can help limit financial loss and legal liability by monitoring and recording events in and around a vehicle and eliminating blind spots to help prevent costly backup accidents.

The color camera system can be configured with up to four infrared night vision CCD cameras for front, side and rear mounting, available in wired or wireless setups. The quality cameras are easy to install, waterproof, rugged in construction and cost effective.

The 5.6” or 7.0” monitor includes built-in controls, automatic turn-signal or reverse views, switching with the direction (“backward,” “left,” or “right”) displayed on the monitor. The cameras are audio enabled so the driver can hear around as well as see around blind spot areas.

SenseStat Obstacle Detection Sensor System The SenseStat Obstacle Detection Sensor System is designed for commercial trucks with trailers, utility vehicles, and buses. The wired or wireless system is activated automatically when reverse gear is engaged. Drivers are alerted to objects behind their vehicles with both an audible and visual indicator (LED display) on the dash-mounted Warning Display Unit.

The four waterproof sensors are easily mounted on the rear of the truck or trailer. All zones are simultaneously displayed in real time, indicating the area closest to an object within one inch.

Cost savings remains the common language of fleet decision makers, but buying decisions are driven by different cultural behaviours, says new global research from Masterlease

Despite political and business pressure, the environment is still not a major factor for fleet decision-makers across the world when looking at strategic vehicle procurement, according to the latest research from international fleet management company Masterlease.

In fact saving money remains the common language of international fleet management across the globe, although the Italians (53%) and the Polish (33%) are more turned on to technology while the UK (2%) and the Dutch (4%) are surprisingly gadget shy, in terms of influencing the buying process, the survey of 2,600 fleet decision-makers revealed.

Almost 60% of Belgians put safety near the top of their list of issues concerning fleet management, while surprisingly, the Austrians (2%) and the Germans (5%) came bottom of the list of countries driven to improve risk in their fleet strategies. Decision makers in Portugal also put risk high on the agenda (43%), with their counterparts in the UK (27%) coming in behind Greece (32%) in terms of their risk focus.

With just 1% putting the environment as a priority, the Greeks and the Mexicans appear to be the least ‘green’, while at 16%, the UK decision-makers come out as championing the eco-cause, although this is still a relatively low priority compared to employee satisfaction which the UK’s managers scored at 34%.

In fact, the environment was regarded as a low priority amongst almost all of those surveyed despite it being currently so high on the political and business agendas around the world.

Masterlease conducted the survey in Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the UK, to discover decision-making drivers across 13 of the 17 countries in which it operates.

At 50%, the overall global findings put cost savings as the main concern for fleet managers, with risk coming in as a second priority. The ability to keep the vehicles on the road was the third most important priority with environmental concerns coming down the list with just 6%.

But the survey revealed some interesting country-by-country variations. More than half of the Italian sample (53%) put technology issues as high on their list with cost savings coming in joint second alongside keeping the vehicle on the road.

The Italians also put employee satisfaction as an important issue (37%) while it figured with only 5% of those in the German sample.

“The findings show a lot of expected commonality in terms of the cost saving issue, but the low rating of environmental concerns was a surprising discovery considering the importance being placed on C02-based tax initiatives around the world,” said Nick Brownrigg, CEO of Masterlease Group. “It is a fallacy that saving the environment and saving money are mutually exclusive. Reducing C02 emissions and costs are two sides of the same coin which is a message we are trying to get across to our international customers.”

He concluded, “Employee satisfaction and risk issues also provided some interesting cultural and geographical variations which went beyond typical stereotyping and provide fuel for thought for lease companies such as Masterlease who need to understand the business imperatives of both global and domestic procurement departments. This is part of our global strategy of thinking globally and acting locally”.
