Onboard Weighing Solutions For The Logistics Industry

Willetton WA, Australia, Apr-20-2017 — /EPR TRANSPORTATION & LOGISTICS NEWS/ — The logistics industry supports inbound and outbound logistics literally carries the weight of the world’s economy, with companies operating in the transport and logistics industry moving goods from place to place as quickly, efficiently and as cost-effectively as possible without compromising on safety.

That’s where onboard weighing solutions play an enormous role.

Transporting heavy loads

Overloaded vehicles not only cause damage to infrastructure, premature wear and tear on the vehicle and excess fuel consumption; they also pose a significant danger to the safety of other road users. To mitigate these risks, there are many strict laws and regulations in place aimed at ensuring the safe and responsible transport of heavy loads – and breaches can result in serious penalties. Legislation includes Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), Chain of Responsibility (CoR) laws and SOLAS (Safety of Lives at Sea).

Payload control

Cost management is a key element of the logistics industry. Operators not only want to keep their own costs down, there is also a knock-on effect on the whole transport chain right to the end user if costs aren’t carefully controlled.

Onboard weighing solutions ensure that trucks are within legal limits and they help logistics companies to be legally compliant and as safe and efficient as possible. These heavy duty yet precise instruments are fitted onto the vehicle and employ a range of weight measurement technologies u to provide accurate and reliable information about gross weight and weight distribution and/or alert either alert operators that they are overloaded.

A big advantage of these onboard weighing solutions is that because they’re fitted to the truck, there’s no need for the vehicle to go to an external weighing station, such as a weighbridge- which may slow down the transportation process. Trucks can be loaded to their optimum weight, with instant information at the driver’s fingertips. What’s more, these instruments provide highly accurate information about axle group weights, total combination weights and payload. This enables operators to have confidence that they’re loading their vehicles properly the first time, maximising their payloads, reducing downtime and optimising their productivity.

Technological advances have further extended the capabilities of these instruments. The advent of wireless digital communications has made the weighing, tracking and billing of freight a much faster, more accurate and traceable process. The units can be fully integrated with smart software which can be customised to a customer’s requirements – and this seamless connection and versatile data management functionality saves time, improves productivity and has positive knock-on effects right along the logistics chain.

Onboard truck scales can be fitted to just about any type of truck, and there are several different systems available which have been developed specifically to suit certain types of vehicle including air-suspension vehicles, bulk tippers, air and spring-suspension vehicles, waste collection vehicles, light commercial vehicles and rigid vehicles.

It’s important that the the correct onboard weighing system is selected for a specific application. For example, if your operation is involved in bulk off-road operations such as quarrying or feed delivery, you would need a system that is specifically engineered for high accuracy in rugged extreme environments.

The logistics, transport and freight industries undoubtedly play a vital role in moving a country’s economy forward. However, it is crucial that operators manage their freight safely and effectively, and to do this, they need to measure it and quantify it appropriately. That’s where onboard weighing solutions come in.

If you’d like to learn more about the advantages of onboard weighing, talk to the experts at AccuOnboard, Australia’s most experienced and professional weighing company. They can provide world-class equipment that covers all vehicle weighing needs from end-to-end, including overloading prevention. To get in touch, please call 1300 367 861 to find out which of their eight branches is closest to you or visit www.accuonboard.com.au to see their full range of high quality onboard weighing solutions.

MojoCar Client Launches in NYC: Book a Ride Online, from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

MojoCar LLC recently released its flagship product, MojoCar Client, a transportation app that allows users to book cars throughout the New York City metro area from an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, or on MojoCar.com – giving commuters a new option that gets them from point A to point B safely, quickly and easily when they’re on the go. The app is currently available for download from the Apple App Store free of charge.

Once users set up a MojoCar Client account, they can choose to book rides “now” or later.” When a client needs a ride now, the app uses GPS technology to instantly send the request to all MojoCar drivers within a two-mile radius of the client’s pickup location. The booking is awarded to the first driver who responds, and the app provides the client with an ETA – guaranteed to be within 15 minutes.

When a client books a ride in advance, the request goes out to all drivers within the MojoCar citywide network. Drivers then compete for the job by submitting bids in real time, auction-style, with prices and vehicle details. In this scenario, the client takes his pick based on price, car and/or user reviews, benefitting from competitive pricing and a selection of cars ranging from economy through premium, including Lincoln Town Cars, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

When clients are dropped off at their destination, they can pay their fare directly through the app – using their own device, or the driver’s. A receipt is automatically sent via email. For rides booked “now,” clients pay a flat fee of $30.95 to go anywhere within Manhattan.

DGL Wow’s Client with IES Technology

When Linda Snyder, President of freight forwarder Diversified Global Logistics (DGL), purchased the Memphis branch of Forward Logistics Group in 2007, she quickly realized the challenges presented by a name change, “All our customers knew us by another name, and everyone was a little skittish at first. We knew we had a few hurdles ahead.”

DGL Wow’s Client with IES Technology

“We knew we were up for a challenge,” adds Bernie Snyder, Vice President at DGL, “One particular shipment comes to mind. In this case, I think it might be best to explain this as a narrative, just as we experienced it. Our German agent had an MD10 aircraft grounded at Frankfurt needing major repairs to one of its Rolls Royce engines,” narrates Bernie Snyder, “Aircraft on Ground (AOG) shipments are always ‘hot’, but this shipment was ‘on fire’. The engines could only be repaired at the Rolls Royce RR-Tay facility outside of Dallas.”

“However, there was more at stake here than just the potential for short-term loss. Our customer was building a relationship with a new account and was concerned about the potential loss of goodwill and trust.”

“We orchestrate everything to ensure the process goes smoothly,” Customs Broker Ron Davis explains, “If you think about it, AOG by its nature is a ‘hiccup’ in the system where something is broken. The trick is how to create order out of a situation which is inherently chaotic. We’re not the ones fixing the aircraft, but we’re the ones who ensure that everything is on-hand and on-time. In a sense, we’re like a surgical team ensuring that the surgeon has all the tools on hand. There are a lot of details that have to mesh perfectly to ensure that the process runs smoothly.”

“In this case, right at wheels-up, we already had all the AMS information on hand. IES products www.iesltd.com allowed the freight to be pre-cleared well before arrival. We were already speaking to the flatbed dispatcher before the flight landed, and the engine was soon on its way to the RR-Tay repair facility.”

Microsimulation Traffic Modelling Specialists Announce United States Expansion

Braidwood Associates, the specialist microsimulation trafficmodelling consultancy, has announced it is to open a second office in the United States to enable it to expand its existing portfolio of clients.

Braidwood Associates was set up in 2005 by Scottish entrepreneur Richard Braidwood, and is expected to report a fourth year of income growth by the end of March. The company now generates up to 90% of its business from its US operations and the 34-year-old expects further gains with the announcement of Barack Obama’s new $787 billion economic stimulus package.

Mr Braidwood is flying to America later this month to finalise plans for his second US office, in New Jersey, to compliment his existing American base in California. In the last 12 months Braidwood Associates has provided traffic management advice through its modelling expertise to a number of major American infrastructure projects including New York City’s Bronx redevelopment and some of the world’s busiest highways such as Interstates 880 and 450 in California.

Mr Braidwood said, “We are in the fortunate position of having now established a specialist business which allows us to provide a high value service with maximum flexibility to some of the largest road authorities and private corporations in the world.

“I believe that we will open a further office in the United States this year and this will position us well for the expected progress of some key American infrastructure projects.
