New rail freight service connects Italian enterprise with Central Asia and China business opportunities

bon_cloud-telefriuli_broadcast_facilities_europawire_sep_13_2016

BEIJING, 16-Sep-2016 — /EPR TRANSPORTATION & LOGISTICS NEWS/ — The biggest story coming out of China today is the launching of the Silk Road on Rails: China-Europe block trains that carry goods across the globe. The proposal to establish China-Europe railroads surprised even the most experienced of rail industry players, yet thousands of trains now traverse these tracks annually.

Telefriuli SpA, the Italian broadcaster, exclusively aired the video series across Italy’s northeastern regions of Friuli Venezia and Eastern Veneto during the first week of September 2016. Telefriuli SpA was set up in 1974 in the North East of Italy. With more than 40 years of history it is also the region’s longest-running broadcast channel.

Today, as certified by Auditel, Telefriuli is by far the most-watched broadcaster in Friuli Venezia Giulia and in Eastern Veneto, and offers its viewers a rich schedule ranging from information to entertainment.

Of the videos. Telefruili Director, Daniele Paroni, said “I think it is crucial for Europe and for China to have a “physical” link which allows more and more narrow and intense social and economic relations between these two global players. In the videos there was a brilliant comparison between the silk road and the rail which links China and Europe.”

The China-Europe rail route is the longest in the world covering almost 10,000 kilometres in total.

Referring to BON Cloud, the producer and distributor of the China-Europe block train video series, Ms Paroni continued, “Telefriuli wants to retrace Marco Polo’s steps, showing to our audience the brilliant productions [BON Cloud is] sending us which also helps to connect Central-Southern Europe with China. Now that we have established this important relationship – BON Cloud and Telefriuli – we really want to continue this journey together, to enable us to achieve mutual satisfaction and knowledge.”

The first block train left Zhengzhou for Hamburg on July 18th, 2013, connecting people along the Silk Road and shortening the distance between continents. The 12-day, six-country journey posed challenges: would European companies welcome the new trade route? Would the cargo be secure? Would the project even be practical?

The trans-Eurasia rail trip began as a once-a-month event but China soon realized it required partners to make it successful. With partners on board, Hamburg became the forerunner. The German port city now serves as both a departure and destination point for the China-Europe block trains.

This project has lowered the cost of transportation significantly and commerce is thriving. There is no doubt about the initiative’s acceptance. The service currently transports goods several times a week from China, the Republic of Korea and Japan, as well as European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland, France and Spain. With the growing success of the initiative, the development of additional European destinations is in the pipeline.

Worldwide Parcel Services Are Also Great Locally

Worldwide Parcel Services sound like a company that should be great Internationally but may be not so good locally but Worldwide Parcel Services are also very proud of the fact that they are also very good in the UK and Ireland. The company have become an extremely competent company in the UK and their delivery patterns are good on time considerations and excellent on price. It is very difficult to find an instance where they are beaten on price or on the delivery pattern in this country. Worldwide Parcel Services have worked very hard in securing couriers who offer the best price for the best service. The company sees no point in employing couriers who are good at looks but are unable to meet the customer’s requirements or expectations. The ability to choose couriers has been a great success for the company as they have been able to use the best couriers in their best fields of operation. It is this last position that has enabled the best service to be obtained for the best area.

Worldwide Parcel Services are as prompt with local deliveries as they are with international orders. One of the great things of the local delivery is that it is almost impossible for the system to go wrong as the parcel is tagged and followed throughout its whole journey. It is logged onto the first computer or slave as it is registered in to the plant and follows the same pattern throughout. Therefore the parcel is tracked and registered throughout its journey and it is virtually impossible to lose it unless by wilful means. The track a parcel function of the website is totally now in sync with the parcel recorded at every stage of its operation. It is now possible to log in to the internet and log on to the Worldwide Parcel Services web site and find out exactly where your parcel is at any particular moment, this will help with arranging men on site for when the parcel has arrived or may be just alerting the site that the parcel will be with them at a set time and hour. Worldwide Parcel Services has worked hard to get a local set up which enhances the total package and the present system is very good indeed.

Worldwide Parcel Services is pleased to offer a simple quotation service which allows the customer to book the parcel in to the system and the wait for the quotation, it all can be carried out using the internet web site, any queries should be instantly resolved by ringing the customer service desk where there is a full complement of highly determined customers service agents. This quotation will cover will cover the whole of the delivery operation and this will include any oddities but which may be required for, say, heavy parcels or special deliver requirements. Worldwide Parcel Services have been very careful to provide a system that will deal with all size of parcels up to 500 Kg in weight which only precludes large loads which would go by container ship. Worldwide Parcel Services are one of the biggest movers of parcels within the UK and they are pleased to work with the best couriers.

Shipping magnate Abdul Qadir Rahman Buhari, the Managing Director of The WAM International, has sealed yet another tender floated by the Tamil Nadu Electrical Board

Shipping magnate Abdul Qadir Rahman Buhari, the Managing Director of The West Asia Maritime International is beginning to raise a few eyebrows in the shipping corridors. In his dogged pursuit of owning ships and winning contracts, the captain of the Chennai-based Corporation has sealed yet another tender floated by the Tamil Nadu Electrical Board which, sources say is tailor-made for Mr Buhari’s self-unloading bulk carrier – the Gem of Ennore, which is intended to move thermal coal from Paradip in Orissa to Ennore/Tuticorin/Karaikal.

The haulier is currently time-chartered by the Tamil Nadu State-owned Poompuhar Shipping Corporation and its 10-year charter period ends Sept/Oct, 2012.

Interestingly, the TNEB’s fresh tender appears to be designed in such a way that no other ship in India has the capacity to bid for it (the tender for the contract has specifically asked for a self unloader feature on the vessel). It’s a home-run for the Gem of Ennore and a smooth transition from one deal to another.

One happens to wonder how a credible agency like PSCL, hired by TNEB for its coal procurement, can be so short-sighted while selecting a vendor. In a country that depends on its coasts for a wide variety of goods, it’s appalling to observe errors in judgement in significant projects with massive financial ramifications.

There is a project that is currently underway to install two gantry cranes at the Ennore port for discharging gearless vessels. The venture is expected to be completed in under 2 years’ time.

The TNEB, amusingly, has brought out a 5-year charter period. The value of a self unloader becomes moot in two years (the gantry cranes are being installed to do exactly what an unloader does). Therefore, the un-loader becomes redundant for the next three years (more of an additional burden to TNEB) and these are the years when the charter hire (around Rs. 20 lakhs plus per day) are 30% to 40% higher than the current rate.

Additionally, infrastructure (gantry cranes) built at huge costs will be under-utilised. These are the years, when having two gearless panamaxes will be financially more viable and sensible than operating the un-loader. In fact, chartering of two gearless vessels to achieve and maintain the same level of transport and supply efficiency at comparable costs would make more economic sense than a self unloader, especially since the gantry cranes are scheduled to come up within two years.

The gantry cranes are being built at the cost of the taxpayers’ money and the government ought to look into it and plug the loophole. Interestingly, the Gem of Ennore was converted more than 10 years ago to suit the requirements of charter.

It was built as a gearless Panamax in 2000 at the Hitachi Zosen Shipyard in Japan. In 2001, she was converted to a self-unloader with cranes and conveyor in China, exclusively for carrying thermal coal from Paradip port in Orissa to Ennore in Tamil Nadu for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. One wonders if the West Asia Maritime Ltd had an idea of things to come in future.

There are zero opportunities for the other bidders for whom there is no level-playing field. Comparatively, the rate for a charter hire per day is Rs. 14.49 lakh for GoE while a gearless panamax rate is 5.35 lakhs. It is evident that the cost per ton to TNEB on the unloader is much higher than carrying the coal on gearless panamaxes.

Why not float a tender for a period of one year instead of tying it down for five years? Even if TNEB considers chartering a self un-loader, the period should be limited to one year only and reviewed for continuation in 2013, considering the fast-changing ground realities.

The vessel has to be provided within the lay days which are less than two months away. A major conversion such as this takes no less than 5 to 6 months. Therefore, there is a conflict here. The chartering negotiations were going on as of 3rd week of July and the vessel is required no later than 15th October.

One cannot help but wonder about the track record of the shipping giant. WAMSPL (Singapore) entered into two contracts with Euroceanica, UK, in 2008 for the time-charter of 2 19,800 DWT chemical tankers – namely ‘LBU Onyx’ and ‘JBU Opal’ for a period of 5 years. WAMPSL is a subsidiary of West Asia and accordingly West Asia, Chennai, provided performance guarantees for each ship.

‘LBU Onyx’ and ‘JBU Opal’ were delivered to WAMSPL by Euroceanica in September 2008 and April 2009, respectively. The charter parties for the two vessels had a balance of approximately 32 months and 39 months to be performed when things started to go wrong.

WAMPSL failed to pay hire rates on time under both the contracts, as a result of which, Euroceanica arrested MV ‘Gem of Safaga’ in Australia as a security for their claim in November 2009.

Excess Baggage Company Introduce Express Overnight Luggage Services

Excess Baggage Company has developed a new overnight luggage service for shipments within the UK and Europe. The service is designed to allow airline passengers to travel light and send their baggage overnight, perfect for destinations such as luggage shipping to France.

It is particularly suited to airline passengers and those who would normally be charged a premium to take their excess baggage with them on board by airlines like Ryanair and Easyjet, as well as British Airways, Air France, KLM and Lufthansa. The charges made by airlines for luggage beyond the 20kg allowance ranges from £20/kg and up, depending on the airline carrier and route. An average suitcase from London to Dublin, above the allowance, would cost around €400 with the airline. Excess Baggage Company’s easy to use service allows the passenger to dispatch his luggage in advance for 24/48 hour door to door delivery on many routes for a fraction of this price.

Excess Baggage Company, www.Excess-Baggage.com have traditionally specialised in Intercontinental Baggage Moving to destinations like shipping to Australia, NZ, South Africa and SE Asia with shipping Freight to China as well, and it is hoped that this new product will help travellers who need to move their baggage at short notice door to door.

Excess International Movers Makes Shipping Possessions Easier For Migrants

With the current economic recession still holding down house prices, and making it difficult to sell, Excess International Movers have come up with a new service to assist migrants. Normally migrants heading for Australia, New Zealand, or Canada; the traditional migration destinations, have their furniture and household goods packed in 20 foot or 40 foot shipping containers for transit via container vessel to their new home.

Excess International Movers Makes Shipping Possessions Easier For Migrants

Excess International Movers are now offering shippers the opportunity to store their goods in the UK for up to twelve months at half price, providing that the goods are all then eventually shipped. On top of this, Excess are offering a discount ‘large baggage/small shipment’ service for immediate necessities, for those who put their households into store. Excess will ship up to two cubic metres door to door to any major city in Australia, New Zealand or Canada for a flat rate of £500* f r o m the London area (small surcharge outside London). That’s a whopping sixteen tea chests equivalent!

The price includes supply of cartons, plus delivery, and collection once the boxes have been packed. Excess have worked with their major agents overseas to provide this special discount service for shippers. Companies like Grace Removals and Kent Moving in Australia and the Moving Company and Transworld Removals in New Zealand were happy to assist to give migrants that extra fillip to assist them in setting up their new homes down under.

To use this service, would be migrants should contact Excess International Movers (www.excess-international.com) 0800 524 4388 at the first available opportunity, to allow a viewing and estimation to be arranged for their household goods. Excess will send out a specially trained estimator, who will assess the volume of the international removals shipment, and provide advice on what to take and what not to take. The estimator will help the migrant decide what are necessities, and what can be put into temporary storage, and take them through all the customs, quarantine and shipping regulations, that they are likely to come up against. After this, it a simple matter of accepting the quotation, and arranging for Excess International Movers’ well trained and experienced removalists to come and pack the shipment for export; crating goods as required, and loading them into an air ride truck for delivery into storage. Goods that are urgently needed can also be collected at this point (or later), and then shipped by air or by sea to coincide with the owner’s arrival in their new country.

DGL Wow’s Client with IES Technology

When Linda Snyder, President of freight forwarder Diversified Global Logistics (DGL), purchased the Memphis branch of Forward Logistics Group in 2007, she quickly realized the challenges presented by a name change, “All our customers knew us by another name, and everyone was a little skittish at first. We knew we had a few hurdles ahead.”

DGL Wow’s Client with IES Technology

“We knew we were up for a challenge,” adds Bernie Snyder, Vice President at DGL, “One particular shipment comes to mind. In this case, I think it might be best to explain this as a narrative, just as we experienced it. Our German agent had an MD10 aircraft grounded at Frankfurt needing major repairs to one of its Rolls Royce engines,” narrates Bernie Snyder, “Aircraft on Ground (AOG) shipments are always ‘hot’, but this shipment was ‘on fire’. The engines could only be repaired at the Rolls Royce RR-Tay facility outside of Dallas.”

“However, there was more at stake here than just the potential for short-term loss. Our customer was building a relationship with a new account and was concerned about the potential loss of goodwill and trust.”

“We orchestrate everything to ensure the process goes smoothly,” Customs Broker Ron Davis explains, “If you think about it, AOG by its nature is a ‘hiccup’ in the system where something is broken. The trick is how to create order out of a situation which is inherently chaotic. We’re not the ones fixing the aircraft, but we’re the ones who ensure that everything is on-hand and on-time. In a sense, we’re like a surgical team ensuring that the surgeon has all the tools on hand. There are a lot of details that have to mesh perfectly to ensure that the process runs smoothly.”

“In this case, right at wheels-up, we already had all the AMS information on hand. IES products www.iesltd.com allowed the freight to be pre-cleared well before arrival. We were already speaking to the flatbed dispatcher before the flight landed, and the engine was soon on its way to the RR-Tay repair facility.”

Freight*Bus The Bus That Delivers!

‘On-Route’ is a radical new urban transportation system concept which would see a Freight*BUS™ optimise the carrying of passengers and freight, thereby tackling the problems of both congestion and pollution.

• The Freight*BUS has been designed with a zero-emission propulsion system able to accommodate either a battery fuel-cell system or small bio gas generator to maintain fully charged batteries. It also features other state-of-the art technologies such as distributed wheel motors and completely new inventions, like ceiling-suspended seating and a patent-protected pallet-less lifting and handling device. The ability to turn in its own length & ‘crab steer’ is great for tight fit bus stops & bus station manoeuvres.

• This avant-garde concept requires a whole new way of thinking about urban transportation systems; stakeholders are invited to help take this model to the next level.

A multi disciplined design specialist has come up with a radical urban transport proposal, called On-Route, which he believes tackles the two biggest problems caused by city-centre transport today; congestion and pollution. Hugh Frost’s Freight*BUS™ www.freight-bus.co.uk is an innovative new design that combines a passenger-carrying bus with that of freight haulage with the minimum of disruption to either service. It can be reconfigured in seconds by the conductor or driver to carry freight and passengers. Furthermore, passenger space & freight space can be easily adjusted to match demand.

Frost’s proposal was submitted to Transport for London (TfL)’s ‘A New Bus for London’ competition,’ which Mayor of London Boris Johnson launched earlier this year. Although the Freight*BUS was not the final winner of the competition, Hugh Frost, designer and concept originator of the On-Route system www.onroutebus.co.uk and the Freight*BUS still wishes to take his idea to the next level and is now looking for stakeholders to help him do this. These could be in the form of bus or commercial vehicle manufacturers who are interested in developing the Freight*BUS from conceptual state into a full-blown prototype; a municipality which would consider trialling the On-Route system, or stakeholder investors, such as venture capitalists that specialise in environmental transportation solutions.

“Taking London as an example, the most optimistic proposals put the average occupancy of its buses at 25%. However, our calculations show that for around four hours a day, their utilisation drops to as low as 20%,” Frost says. “Despite this, city authorities are tasked with increasing the numbers of vehicles, routes and service frequency to supposedly reduce congestion and improve services. My idea is to put our cities’ buses to good use by using them to provide an alternative city freight system at times of low passenger capacity utilisation. This could reduce the numbers of freight vehicles on city roads by as much as 30%. By using the buses to carry freight in the evening and overnight, the utilisation of these vehicles would be maximised, offering maximum return on investment (ROI) and substantially increased revenue from the vehicles. However, in order to fulfil this dual role, the entire concept of buses, as we know them today, needs to be revisualised.”

With this in the mind, the Freight*Bus has been designed to allow varying combinations of passenger & freight space to match demand. In full passenger configuration, it provides seating for up to 90 passengers – that’s 43 more than the bendy-bus and standing room for a further 40 passengers. With standing room only on the lower deck, it could accommodate 150 people with 52 seated. Meanwhile, in its full freight configuration the Freight*BUS is designed to accommodate 35 freight pods (equivalent to 35 europallets).

Loaded with other State-of-the-Art Technology

The Freight*BUS combines a number of completely new ideas, patents for which have already been applied, combined with leading-edge technology that is already proven in automotive applications or is undergoing extensive on-road trials.

The design of Freight*BUS will readily accommodate battery or fuel cell technology. The 200mm deep space in the main floor of the bus will house batteries or fuel cells and the accompanying hydrogen storage tanks (if required). Indeed, it is envisaged that when fuel cell technology is affordable, that the fleet could be easily switched to this propulsion system, while keeping the drive motors and control systems in place. Similarly, its re-configurable interior design could even be broadly applied to existing vehicles built with combustion engines. However, it is the designer’s view that the latest and emerging advances in battery technology will make the re-fit and the use of hydrogen and fuel cells unnecessary. Freight*BUS would also feature the very latest in other emission-saving technology , such as distributed wheel motors which can be as much as 50% more efficient that central motors.

With the latest battery technology, an 80% recharge is possible in around 1 minute. This could be done at bus stations or other major stops, with a recharge point built into key bus stops. These 1 minute recharges do not seriously affect battery life and can be performed within the duration of a standard stop. Alternatively, in the short term, the electric drive & battery storage system could be ‘hybridised’ with a small, efficient, clean burning LPG fuelled, 2 litre generator to top up batteries on the move. Adopting the all battery concept will enable off peak green energy to be stored in the vast reservoir of battery energy that would be created by large fleets of the Freight*Bus.

In respect of carriage versatility, seating is suspended from the ceiling and can be configured for almost any combination of passenger & freight space between these limits. This is achieved by designing the seating to be folded away. In fact, each 2 person seat (on both decks) can be folded into the ceiling in seconds. Seats are fixed to the ceiling through special anti-vibration mounts to improve ride quality. In terms of the vehicle’s freight-carrying capabilities, a pallet-less lifting & handling device is key to easy loading/unloading. Indeed, a crucial part of the interior design is a compact, low cost pod handling system, which has patent protection.

Route Consolidation

When looking at the idea of consolidation in relation to bus routes and passenger transport, Frost quickly realised that not only were there opportunities to improve bus routing & linking with other transport services and types using consolidation principals, but that there is an even bigger opportunity to use the buses for freight as well as passenger movement that would reduce the numbers of goods vehicles on city roads (especially light goods vans which are responsible for 15% of all UK carbon emissions from all forms of transportation) by as much as 50%. He remarks: “We looked at passenger & freight systems end to end and concluded that there is sufficient overlap to be able to build on and integrate existing infrastructure of both passenger & freight systems. However, it will be necessary to develop consolidation centres and cross-docks for freight movement, and hubs for passenger and freight delivery and collection. Many of these elements already exist and can be linked into existing infrastructure such as bus/rail stations & depots; haulage/sorting depots etc. Hubs would also be located at major bus stops, and concentrations of retail, commercial & light industrial units.

Frost points to studies which have already been carried out in London showing that the implementation of alternative freight systems, including the use of ‘Consolidation Centres’ in city areas can give exceptional results. One such study found a 68% reduction in construction vehicles entering the City of London for the project, an average journey time reduction of 2 hours, a circa 75% reduction of CO2 emissions, and a 10% reduction in local distribution journey times. The On-Route Bus supports the existing aims of the London Freight Plan as set out of in the Mayor of London’s existing Transport Strategy.
