Onboard Weighing Solutions For The Logistics Industry

Willetton WA, Australia, Apr-20-2017 — /EPR TRANSPORTATION & LOGISTICS NEWS/ — The logistics industry supports inbound and outbound logistics literally carries the weight of the world’s economy, with companies operating in the transport and logistics industry moving goods from place to place as quickly, efficiently and as cost-effectively as possible without compromising on safety.

That’s where onboard weighing solutions play an enormous role.

Transporting heavy loads

Overloaded vehicles not only cause damage to infrastructure, premature wear and tear on the vehicle and excess fuel consumption; they also pose a significant danger to the safety of other road users. To mitigate these risks, there are many strict laws and regulations in place aimed at ensuring the safe and responsible transport of heavy loads – and breaches can result in serious penalties. Legislation includes Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), Chain of Responsibility (CoR) laws and SOLAS (Safety of Lives at Sea).

Payload control

Cost management is a key element of the logistics industry. Operators not only want to keep their own costs down, there is also a knock-on effect on the whole transport chain right to the end user if costs aren’t carefully controlled.

Onboard weighing solutions ensure that trucks are within legal limits and they help logistics companies to be legally compliant and as safe and efficient as possible. These heavy duty yet precise instruments are fitted onto the vehicle and employ a range of weight measurement technologies u to provide accurate and reliable information about gross weight and weight distribution and/or alert either alert operators that they are overloaded.

A big advantage of these onboard weighing solutions is that because they’re fitted to the truck, there’s no need for the vehicle to go to an external weighing station, such as a weighbridge- which may slow down the transportation process. Trucks can be loaded to their optimum weight, with instant information at the driver’s fingertips. What’s more, these instruments provide highly accurate information about axle group weights, total combination weights and payload. This enables operators to have confidence that they’re loading their vehicles properly the first time, maximising their payloads, reducing downtime and optimising their productivity.

Technological advances have further extended the capabilities of these instruments. The advent of wireless digital communications has made the weighing, tracking and billing of freight a much faster, more accurate and traceable process. The units can be fully integrated with smart software which can be customised to a customer’s requirements – and this seamless connection and versatile data management functionality saves time, improves productivity and has positive knock-on effects right along the logistics chain.

Onboard truck scales can be fitted to just about any type of truck, and there are several different systems available which have been developed specifically to suit certain types of vehicle including air-suspension vehicles, bulk tippers, air and spring-suspension vehicles, waste collection vehicles, light commercial vehicles and rigid vehicles.

It’s important that the the correct onboard weighing system is selected for a specific application. For example, if your operation is involved in bulk off-road operations such as quarrying or feed delivery, you would need a system that is specifically engineered for high accuracy in rugged extreme environments.

The logistics, transport and freight industries undoubtedly play a vital role in moving a country’s economy forward. However, it is crucial that operators manage their freight safely and effectively, and to do this, they need to measure it and quantify it appropriately. That’s where onboard weighing solutions come in.

If you’d like to learn more about the advantages of onboard weighing, talk to the experts at AccuOnboard, Australia’s most experienced and professional weighing company. They can provide world-class equipment that covers all vehicle weighing needs from end-to-end, including overloading prevention. H.O. Wolding driver wins national trucking award

Julie Matulle, a truck driver for H.O. Wolding of Amherst, Wis., has been named the winner of the fourth annual Mike O’Connell Memorial Trucking’s Top Rookie Award.

Matulle, who was chosen from a field of 10 finalists, received the award in ceremonies on Aug. 22 at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas.

In an interview with Eric Harley of Red Eye Radio after receiving the award, Matulle said she could not believe it when she learned she was nominated and that hearing that she was actually the winner “took her breath away.”

“I really, really love my job and the chance to make myself happy and others happy as well,” she said in reflecting on her first year as a professional driver.

Matulle adds that she still has a hard time believing she won the award. “The other finalists were such amazing individuals and for me to win this award is just incredible. It is just a great honor.”

The award contest, which includes $10,000 and a variety of prizes, was launched by Randall-Reilly Recruiting Media three years ago to increase pride and professionalism among new drivers and to promote truck driving as a career choice during a severe driver shortage.

The 10 finalists were selected by an expert panel of judges representing motor carriers, training schools (public and private), suppliers and trade associations. There were 55 rookie drivers who were submitted by their employers for this year’s contest.

The criteria used to determine the winner were availability for loads, on-time delivery, highway safety performance, customer relations, work record and non-job related activities.

Under the contest’s selection criteria, any commercial driver’s license holder who has graduated from a Professional Truck Driving Institute-certified school, National Association of Publicly Funded Truck Driving school or Commercial Vehicle Training Association school within the past year and has been employed by a trucking company for less than one year is eligible for the award.
The Mike O’Connell Memorial Trucking’s Top Rookie contest operates as a partnership among Randall-Reilly, Truckload Carriers Association, Commercial Vehicle Training Association, Rand McNally, Shell ROTELLA, Pilot Flying J, Progressive Commercial Insurance, National Association of Publicly Funded Truck Driving Schools, American Trucking Associations and the Red Eye Radio Network.

Matulle is the third H.O. Wolding driver in the last two years to be chosen as a finalist. Last year, Nathan Reardon and Sandra Sherill were among the 10 finalists.

Truck driving is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Matulle, who previously managed the fuel desk for several years at the Planeview Travel Plaza in Oshkosh, Wis., and then worked for 19 years in the shipping department at the Quad Graphics plant in Lomira, Wis.

After raising her two children as a single parent, she decided to pursue her goal of driving for a living. She completed the trucking driving program at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, Wis., in 2013 and soon afterward was hired at H.O. Wolding, a short, regional and long haul trucking firm.

Matulle says that trucking has affected every part of her life since she was a child. “My father started driving milk trucks at the age of 13 for his father and eventually purchased the business. I grew up on a farm with three trucks. I was the youngest so I was responsible for the farm end, but I was always the silly little girl who wanted to drive a truck.”

According to Marc Wolding, director of operations for H.O. Wolding, Matulle has quickly became known around the company as a hard worker and for always having a positive attitude, even when faced with adverse situations.

“Two of Julie’s strengths are her positive attitude and her ability to make the best of challenges,” says Wolding. “She understands the industry and knows that if she puts her best foot forward that she will be successful. Her dedication to doing her job as well as possible made us proud to nominate her for this award.”

Wolding notes that Matulle is consistently available for loads and is often running ahead of schedule. Since joining the company, Matulle has averaged 2,550 miles per week and has accumulated more than 100,000 miles.

Rob Behnke, who was Matulle’s instructor at Fox Valley Technical College, says she quickly grew into a leader while she was a student at FVTC. “Julie was not intimidated by the industry, and she was one of the most energetic and respected students we have had in quite some time.”

In looking forward to building a career in trucking, Matulle’s energy and enthusiasm are evident and she readily admits to “truly living a dream and loving my life.” Her career goals include becoming an on-road trainer for Wolding’s female drivers.

In addition to being a proud driving professional and trucking advocate, Matulle has served as a volunteer on numerous occasions. She has contributed many hours to projects for the U.S. military including Wounded Warrior and has prepared and sent care packages to the deployed. She has also served as a district manager for the Special Olympics Polar Plunge for Kwik-Trip employees for 10 years.

About H.O. Wolding
H.O. Wolding has been in business for more than 75 years and employs more than 400 workers. The company serves customers over the 48 contiguous states and maintains a growing fleet of more than 350 tractors and 1100 trailers.

Shipping magnate Abdul Qadir Rahman Buhari, the Managing Director of The WAM International, has sealed yet another tender floated by the Tamil Nadu Electrical Board

Shipping magnate Abdul Qadir Rahman Buhari, the Managing Director of The West Asia Maritime International is beginning to raise a few eyebrows in the shipping corridors. In his dogged pursuit of owning ships and winning contracts, the captain of the Chennai-based Corporation has sealed yet another tender floated by the Tamil Nadu Electrical Board which, sources say is tailor-made for Mr Buhari’s self-unloading bulk carrier – the Gem of Ennore, which is intended to move thermal coal from Paradip in Orissa to Ennore/Tuticorin/Karaikal.

The haulier is currently time-chartered by the Tamil Nadu State-owned Poompuhar Shipping Corporation and its 10-year charter period ends Sept/Oct, 2012.

Interestingly, the TNEB’s fresh tender appears to be designed in such a way that no other ship in India has the capacity to bid for it (the tender for the contract has specifically asked for a self unloader feature on the vessel). It’s a home-run for the Gem of Ennore and a smooth transition from one deal to another.

One happens to wonder how a credible agency like PSCL, hired by TNEB for its coal procurement, can be so short-sighted while selecting a vendor. In a country that depends on its coasts for a wide variety of goods, it’s appalling to observe errors in judgement in significant projects with massive financial ramifications.

There is a project that is currently underway to install two gantry cranes at the Ennore port for discharging gearless vessels. The venture is expected to be completed in under 2 years’ time.

The TNEB, amusingly, has brought out a 5-year charter period. The value of a self unloader becomes moot in two years (the gantry cranes are being installed to do exactly what an unloader does). Therefore, the un-loader becomes redundant for the next three years (more of an additional burden to TNEB) and these are the years when the charter hire (around Rs. 20 lakhs plus per day) are 30% to 40% higher than the current rate.

Additionally, infrastructure (gantry cranes) built at huge costs will be under-utilised. These are the years, when having two gearless panamaxes will be financially more viable and sensible than operating the un-loader. In fact, chartering of two gearless vessels to achieve and maintain the same level of transport and supply efficiency at comparable costs would make more economic sense than a self unloader, especially since the gantry cranes are scheduled to come up within two years.

The gantry cranes are being built at the cost of the taxpayers’ money and the government ought to look into it and plug the loophole. Interestingly, the Gem of Ennore was converted more than 10 years ago to suit the requirements of charter.

It was built as a gearless Panamax in 2000 at the Hitachi Zosen Shipyard in Japan. In 2001, she was converted to a self-unloader with cranes and conveyor in China, exclusively for carrying thermal coal from Paradip port in Orissa to Ennore in Tamil Nadu for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. One wonders if the West Asia Maritime Ltd had an idea of things to come in future.

There are zero opportunities for the other bidders for whom there is no level-playing field. Comparatively, the rate for a charter hire per day is Rs. 14.49 lakh for GoE while a gearless panamax rate is 5.35 lakhs. It is evident that the cost per ton to TNEB on the unloader is much higher than carrying the coal on gearless panamaxes.

Why not float a tender for a period of one year instead of tying it down for five years? Even if TNEB considers chartering a self un-loader, the period should be limited to one year only and reviewed for continuation in 2013, considering the fast-changing ground realities.

The vessel has to be provided within the lay days which are less than two months away. A major conversion such as this takes no less than 5 to 6 months. Therefore, there is a conflict here. The chartering negotiations were going on as of 3rd week of July and the vessel is required no later than 15th October.

One cannot help but wonder about the track record of the shipping giant. WAMSPL (Singapore) entered into two contracts with Euroceanica, UK, in 2008 for the time-charter of 2 19,800 DWT chemical tankers – namely ‘LBU Onyx’ and ‘JBU Opal’ for a period of 5 years. WAMPSL is a subsidiary of West Asia and accordingly West Asia, Chennai, provided performance guarantees for each ship.

‘LBU Onyx’ and ‘JBU Opal’ were delivered to WAMSPL by Euroceanica in September 2008 and April 2009, respectively. The charter parties for the two vessels had a balance of approximately 32 months and 39 months to be performed when things started to go wrong.

WAMPSL failed to pay hire rates on time under both the contracts, as a result of which, Euroceanica arrested MV ‘Gem of Safaga’ in Australia as a security for their claim in November 2009.

VisionStat Plus Integrated Obstacle Detection Sensor & Video System

Mobile Awareness, LLC, a provider of leading-edge transportation safety products, today announced VisionStat™ Plus, an extremely affordable and complete commercial-grade system to prevent backing accidents. VisionStat Plus offers an integrated version of their SenseStat™ Obstacle Detection Sensor System that connects directly with their wired VisionStat Camera System with no additional cabling required.

VisionStat Plus is an advanced safety solution which combines two technologies to aid in the prevention of costly backing accidents. Utilizing a leading-edge obstacle detection sensor system (SenseStat), which is displayed on a backing camera video monitor (VisionStat), the driver is provided both audible and visual information when an obstacle is detected in the rear of the vehicle. The combined features allow for visual confirmation via a CCD camera along with the distance and proximity from any of four (4) sensor zones – the driver sees the exact distance (accurate to 1-inch), to the closest object on the monitor.

SenseStat is the leading-edge obstacle detection system that monitors four 4 zones simultaneously indicating the area closest to an object or person. VisionStat is a rugged easily installable video system available with either a 5.6” or the 7” Color LCD Monitor which is configurable with up to four (4) infrared night vision CCD cameras. VisionStat Plus is the extremely cost-effective result of integrating the SenseStat™ Obstacle Detection Sensor System directly into the VisionStat Camera System with no additional wiring required.

“Mobile Awareness continues to see an increasing demand among fleets for more flexible, effective and affordable safety systems” says Brandon Stotsenburg, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Mobile Awareness. “By developing VisionStat Plus we continue our commitment to provide easy-to-install, cost-effective and technically advanced solutions for enhanced vehicle safety.”

In the past, customers would choose between two of the most common blind spot monitoring methods, a backing camera or an obstacle detection system. While each has important advantages, the cost of purchasing and installing two different systems was often prohibitive. By offering an integrated version, the combined safety effects of a VisionStat camera (visual) “Plus” the object detection of a SenseStat sensor (audible alarm) are realized at cost (starting at $675.00) often below other rugged camera systems alone. VisionStat Plus is ideal for all types of single unit vehicle fleets in urban areas where backing safety is often stressed.

Stotsenburg concludes, “There are many advantages to utilizing active backing sensor technology with a reversing camera system. One of the most critical being when the driver is not viewing the video monitor, the audio from the sensor system can bring attention to an unforeseen object or individual behind their vehicle. Ultimately, this added driver awareness will reduce costs and backing accidents.”

Europcar, Mannequins, False Legs And The Back End Of A Horse

Europcar hires out thousands of vehicles daily, so it is not surprising that a survey of its branches revealed some strange excuses for damage and late return as well as some rather unusual items of lost property.

While the Europcar survey revealed some surprising results, perhaps one of the most amusing was supplied by a car hire customer who got more than he bargained for while he waited for a horse to pass on a country lane, after the horse decided to take a rest on the bonnet. The driver watched in horror as a horse, complete with rider in tow, slowly backed onto the car as a vehicle on the opposite side passed in a narrow country lane.

Another unusual animal encounter was reported when Europcar staff at the Newport car hire branch noticed a large chunk was missing from the bumper of one of their cars. The customer explained they had visited Longleat Safari Park and driven through the lion’s enclosure where a lion had taken off a part of the bumper with his claws.

The survey also showed that while sunglasses, CDs, mobile phones and keys are among the most common items left in Europcar’s vehicles, sometimes stranger items can also turn up – ranging from items like a mannequin, to 50 fluorescent light bulbs, and a Scottish Piper’s black ostrich hat. As well as these strange items, Europcar’s customers have also been known to leave more valuable goods. One customer left £1000 worth of designer clothes in the boot of a car.

Derby car hire customer nearly lost their cool when they were hit by a van driver from behind. When Europcar’s staff asked why he had driven into her, she explained that he’d been distracted by the ice cream he was eating flying onto his seat.

Catriona Lougher, Marketing Director for Europcar commented, “There’s never a dull day in the life of a hire car as some of these stories and items of lost property reveal. Our staff are always professional and understanding no matter what the reason for late return or damage and often go to great pains to reunite lost and forgotten property with their rightful owners.”

Integrity Group US Names Distributor for 3 Commercial Vehicle Safety Products

Integrity Group US has been named by Mobile Awareness, LLC™ as a national distributor for three safety products aimed at commercial vehicle fleet operators at airports, the parking industry, health care facilities, hotels/resorts, car rental agencies and universities.

Slideshow image

The three products — TireStat™ TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system), VisionStat™ Camera Systems, and SenseStat™ Obstacle Detection Sensor System, – are designed to improve overall driving safety, while reducing costs.

“The tire monitoring product gives critical data concerning the vehicle’s tire pressure and temperature,” said Jim Newell, Director of Product Sales for Integrity Group US,” while the other two high-tech products make it easier for drivers to monitor through cameras or sensors the areas beside and behind the truck, van or bus as it backs up.”

TireStat TPMS The TireStat TPMS detects overheated, under-inflated, over-inflated and rapid leaking tires before a tire incident occurs. The TireStat sensors install directly on the tire valve stems and transmit the actual tire pressure and temperature to the display wirelessly. Alert levels are easy to set for both pressure and temperature for each tire. The sensors have an anti-theft feature and air can be added without removing the sensors.

“Properly inflated tires increase overall fuel economy, as well as enhance fleet safety,” Newell stated. He explained that a 20 percent under-inflated tire reduces tire life by approximately 25 percent. “This costs money,” he said, “but more importantly, it could lead to possible tire failure and a serious accident.” “The return on investment for adding TireStat TPMS to fleet vehicles could be as quick as 10 months, when you consider the fuel cost savings, tire maintenance/wear costs, reduced downtime, reduced liability/accidents and reduced vehicle wear,” Newell said.

VisionStat Camera Systems The VisionStat Camera Systems can help limit financial loss and legal liability by monitoring and recording events in and around a vehicle and eliminating blind spots to help prevent costly backup accidents.

The color camera system can be configured with up to four infrared night vision CCD cameras for front, side and rear mounting, available in wired or wireless setups. The quality cameras are easy to install, waterproof, rugged in construction and cost effective.

The 5.6” or 7.0” monitor includes built-in controls, automatic turn-signal or reverse views, switching with the direction (“backward,” “left,” or “right”) displayed on the monitor. The cameras are audio enabled so the driver can hear around as well as see around blind spot areas.

SenseStat Obstacle Detection Sensor System The SenseStat Obstacle Detection Sensor System is designed for commercial trucks with trailers, utility vehicles, and buses. The wired or wireless system is activated automatically when reverse gear is engaged. Drivers are alerted to objects behind their vehicles with both an audible and visual indicator (LED display) on the dash-mounted Warning Display Unit.

The four waterproof sensors are easily mounted on the rear of the truck or trailer. All zones are simultaneously displayed in real time, indicating the area closest to an object within one inch.

With Escalating Fuel Prices, Global Businesses Have To Face The Reality Of Increasing Costs To Their Fleet Management

Masterlease reports global vehicle fleets have seen their fuel bills rise by as much as a third in the last year, making fuel management a boardroom issue

Global vehicle fleets have seen their fuel bills rise by as much as a third in the last year according to research by international leasing company Masterlease.

With vehicle manufacturers’ continuous improvements in fuel efficiency now being swamped by escalating fuel prices, global businesses have to face the reality of increasing costs to their fleet management.

While average diesel prices have soared by a third in the last year, the story is not quite as grim for unleaded petrol – although globally it has still increased on average by 18% since 2007.

Despite the overall increase in fuel prices, the latest research by Masterlease shows some interesting differences between the countries. The most expensive countries to purchase fuel from are the UK, Norway and Sweden, although the price increases over the last year have not been as dramatic as in others.

At the other end of the spectrum, Australia remains the cheapest place to purchase fuel – although over the last twelve months the price of diesel has increased by 33%. However, the country that has endured the biggest price hike is Austria, with diesel prices rising a staggering 42%.

Masterlease carried out the survey in all 17 countries in which it operates to get a true picture of how much fuel is really costing global customers. The research was conducted in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

As well as the global price hikes on fuel, one factor that has a big impact on global fleet fuel bills is the provision of free private fuel to company car drivers. In nine out of the 17 countries, this is a taxed benefit, while in five of the countries surveyed (Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Australia), free private fuel is not taxed.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in Australia, where as one of the highest emitters of carbon in the world, contributing on average 27.54 tonnes to the atmosphere every year per person, many businesses are looking at measures to compensate by investing in formal carbon offsetting activities.

Nick Brownrigg, CEO of Masterlease Group, commented: “While the fuel issue may not be particularly new, the relative cost of fuel has been the biggest recent talking point in fleet management and it would come top, or close to the top, with every fleet decision maker, wherever they are in the world. As a result, the continuing volatility in fuel prices has emphasised the importance to the fleet industry of effective fuel management and accessibility of information to help control costs at every stage.

“It is important for global businesses to understand exactly how much they are spending on fuel across all of their country operations, so that they can look for cost saving opportunities.

Once there is an understanding about the total fuel bill, businesses should then consult an independent expert to advise them on how to reduce these costs. There are enormous benefits to businesses that can demonstrate efficiency in terms of meeting these challenges. It simply means more effective measurement of MPG, fuel and fleet costs, and to achieve this, businesses need to make fuel management a boardroom issue.”

Cost savings remains the common language of fleet decision makers, but buying decisions are driven by different cultural behaviours, says new global research from Masterlease

Despite political and business pressure, the environment is still not a major factor for fleet decision-makers across the world when looking at strategic vehicle procurement, according to the latest research from international fleet management company Masterlease.

In fact saving money remains the common language of international fleet management across the globe, although the Italians (53%) and the Polish (33%) are more turned on to technology while the UK (2%) and the Dutch (4%) are surprisingly gadget shy, in terms of influencing the buying process, the survey of 2,600 fleet decision-makers revealed.

Almost 60% of Belgians put safety near the top of their list of issues concerning fleet management, while surprisingly, the Austrians (2%) and the Germans (5%) came bottom of the list of countries driven to improve risk in their fleet strategies. Decision makers in Portugal also put risk high on the agenda (43%), with their counterparts in the UK (27%) coming in behind Greece (32%) in terms of their risk focus.

With just 1% putting the environment as a priority, the Greeks and the Mexicans appear to be the least ‘green’, while at 16%, the UK decision-makers come out as championing the eco-cause, although this is still a relatively low priority compared to employee satisfaction which the UK’s managers scored at 34%.

In fact, the environment was regarded as a low priority amongst almost all of those surveyed despite it being currently so high on the political and business agendas around the world.

Masterlease conducted the survey in Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the UK, to discover decision-making drivers across 13 of the 17 countries in which it operates.

At 50%, the overall global findings put cost savings as the main concern for fleet managers, with risk coming in as a second priority. The ability to keep the vehicles on the road was the third most important priority with environmental concerns coming down the list with just 6%.

But the survey revealed some interesting country-by-country variations. More than half of the Italian sample (53%) put technology issues as high on their list with cost savings coming in joint second alongside keeping the vehicle on the road.

The Italians also put employee satisfaction as an important issue (37%) while it figured with only 5% of those in the German sample.

“The findings show a lot of expected commonality in terms of the cost saving issue, but the low rating of environmental concerns was a surprising discovery considering the importance being placed on C02-based tax initiatives around the world,” said Nick Brownrigg, CEO of Masterlease Group. “It is a fallacy that saving the environment and saving money are mutually exclusive. Reducing C02 emissions and costs are two sides of the same coin which is a message we are trying to get across to our international customers.”

He concluded, “Employee satisfaction and risk issues also provided some interesting cultural and geographical variations which went beyond typical stereotyping and provide fuel for thought for lease companies such as Masterlease who need to understand the business imperatives of both global and domestic procurement departments. This is part of our global strategy of thinking globally and acting locally”.
